As we help our child hone his best piece to present at the year-end recital, this quote shared by Dr Christina Tio during the Parents Talk for this year's Piano Institute came to mind:
“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” - (not) Aristotle
(Dr Tio was right in doubting its attribution - this line was created by philosopher Will Durant in paraphrasing the original quote by Aristotle.)
Over the next couple of weeks, let's work on continuing to put in place the habit of daily practice, on adjusting our instrument set-up to facilitate consistently correct posture, on fine-tuning our audio-visual set-up to support our child in giving his best performance, on working out those tricky spots, and in practising those seemingly tiny details with our child - beautiful bow, moving from the floor to the instrument, the magical start and magical moment of silence at the end.
Excellence will take care of and present itself on the stage on recital day.
